ODD & TRUE is Now Available to Preorder! And It Has a Release Date!

I now have an official release date for my next young adult novel, Odd & True: September 5, 2017. The cover is currently undergoing some major changes, so it will probably still be a little while before I'm able to share anything, but I know the design will be stunning.

Even without the cover, the novel is starting to show up on sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble for preordering. On the book's page at Abrams, you'll find links to the major online stores that will be carrying it.

Proofreading the typeset pages of Odd & True.
The official synopsis has yet to be revealed, but I will say that it's the story of two Edwardian sisters, Odette and Trudchen Grey, known as Od and Tru. Older sister Od has always told Tru elaborate stories about their past and insists that they're descended from monster hunters. Now that Tru is older, she realizes that her sister has been using these tales to protect her from their family's painful secrets. Tru will now do whatever it takes to learn the truth about who they really are, even if it means she must join her sister on a quest to slay a mythical beast.

I also recently learned that the paperback edition of the The Steep and Thorny Way will be published August 8, 2017.

Much more info coming soon!

YESTERNIGHT Release Day!

My second novel for adults, Yesternight, releases today, and I'll be celebrating with a reading and signing this evening at Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, Oregon.  The event starts at 7:00 pm. Cupcakes, of course, will be included.

I'm so excited that this book is finally heading out into the world. My team at HarperCollins, including my editor, Lucia Macro, has done such a wonderful job with the novel, and their enthusiasm for it makes me incredibly happy.

Here's more info, reviews, and ordering options for Yesternight:

Adult Fiction
Available today, October 4, 2016!
William Morrow/HarperCollins
Paperback, ISBN 9780062440860

In 1925, Alice Lind steps off a train in the rain-soaked coastal hamlet of Gordon Bay, Oregon. There, she expects to do nothing more difficult than administer IQ tests to a group of rural schoolchildren. A trained psychologist, Alice believes mysteries of the mind can be unlocked scientifically, but now her views are about to be challenged by one curious child.

Seven-year-old Janie O’Daire is a mathematical genius, which is surprising. But what is disturbing are the stories she tells: that her name was once Violet, she grew up in Kansas decades earlier, and she drowned at age nineteen. Alice delves into these stories, at first believing they’re no more than the product of the girl’s vast imagination. But, slowly, Alice comes to the realization that Janie might indeed be telling a strange truth.

Alice knows the investigation may endanger her already shaky professional reputation, and as a woman in a field dominated by men she has no room for mistakes. But she is unprepared for the ways it will illuminate terrifying mysteries within her own past, and in the process, irrevocably change her life.

Praise for YESTERNIGHT:

“Winters follows The Uninvited (2015) with another gripping historical novel, this one an exploration of the effects of suppressed trauma and desire . . . Winters unveils the unspoken complexities of humankind in this well-written tale that is suspenseful in all the right places, and will keep readers guessing at every page.”
—Booklist

“Atmospheric and spooky with real gothic flair, the latest from Winters (The Uninvited) introduces a realistically flawed heroine stifled by the conventions of her time.”
—Library Journal

“Readers be warned; this is not a simple mystery with a paranormal twist. Winters, a YA author, moves into adult fiction with ease, crafting a chilling tale that takes a few unusual, disturbing turns that suck readers into her web of suspense. Here is a story of possible reincarnation and madness that grips readers from the opening dreary, cold moment to the bitter end and leaves one feeling unsettled, yet satisfied . . .”
—RT Book Reviews (4-star review)

“Cat Winters's tale of doubt, belief, and mystery drew me in from the first page. As the heroine journeys through 1920s America, unraveling layers of secrets and deceptions, including her own, this book weaves a chilling spell. Full of twists and dark surprises, Yesternight is a haunting, unforgettable read.”
—Simone St. James, award-winning author of
The Haunting of Maddy Clare and Lost Among the Living

THE STEEP AND THORNY WAY Publication Day!

The Steep and Thorny Way is here!

I'm so thrilled to announce that The Steep and Thorny Way is now available from Amulet Books in both hardcover and ebook formats.

I started writing this Hamlet-inspired 1920s tale of racism, murder, survival, and friendship in 2013. Work on The Uninvited forced me to put the book aside for almost a full year, but then I came back to the manuscript feeling more passionate than ever about finishing it. Thanks to my editor, Maggie Lehrman, and my agent, Barbara Poelle, for believing in my vision and allowing me to share this book with the world.

For a list of my upcoming speaking appearances, please visit my Events page.

★ “Unique and riveting historical fiction that feels anything but dated.”

—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

“A rollercoaster ride of a novel.”
—Bustle

My Two August Releases Are Now Available

Back in 2013, I sold my adult novel The Uninvited to HarperCollins, and my short story "Emmeline" sold to Penguin as part of the YA horror anthology Slasher Girls & Monster Boys. Back then I learned that The Uninvited would be published in Summer 2015 and Slasher Girls & Monster Boys would release in Fall 2015. I imagined celebrating their publications about three months apart from each other.

Well, it turned out that Summer 2015 for HarperCollins and Fall 2015 for Penguin fell so close together that these two books ended up publishing only a week apart. They're both available as of today, and I'm so thankful that both publishers allowed them to head out into the world.

Here's more info about both books.

★ “Winters’s masterful debut novel is an impressively researched marriage of the tragedies of wartime, the 1918 flu epidemic, the contemporaneous Spiritualism craze, and a chilling love story and mystery... deliciously creepy.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Winters strikes just the right balance between history and ghost story, neatly capturing the tenor of the times, as growing scientific inquiry collided with heightened spiritualist curiosity.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“This engrossing combination of historical fiction, ghost story, psychological thriller, and straight-up whodunit moves between genres with stunning ease, maximizing the tropes of each to satisfying effect.”
—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Mary Shelley is a likable, sympathetic heroine, and through her story, teen readers will get a glimpse of a fascinating time period, made all the more real by the haunting historic photographs that pepper the novel.”
—BookPage

“[A] gorgeous production...The book’s historic setting is as much a star as the plucky Mary Shelley...”
—Library Journal

“Words like ‘unputdownable’ and ‘irresistible’ are simply not enough for Cat Winters’s In the Shadow of Blackbirds. Days after finishing this story, it remains the first thought I have in the morning, and the thing that haunts me until I sleep.”

A Tentative Release Date

I now have a tentative release date for In the Shadow of Blackbirds: April 1, 2013. The date won't be official until the Amulet Books Spring 2013 catalog debuts in another month or so, but it sounds like there's a strong possibility that will be the date. Definitely check back here for updates by October.

Furthermore, In the Shadow of Blackbirds is now available for pre-ordering over at Amazon. We haven't yet revealed the cover or the official synopsis, so the Amazon page for the book is a little empty right now. Here's the only blurb we've released about the novel so far:

Cat Winters's IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS, the story of a teen girl mourning the loss of her first love in 1918 California, where a flu has turned deadlier than a world war, and spirit communication has become a dark and dangerous obsession, illustrated with early-twentieth-century photographs.
(From Publishers Marketplace)

I'll make a much larger announcement—and share details about the Spring 2013 releases of my fellow Amulet Books authors—when there's more info to reveal.
